Would he be able to do so doesn't matter. and then Regis could've taken his remains to the other end of the world and nursed him back to health and reason with him after that. He could've been gravely injured, hacked to pieces, etc. It wasn't necessary for Regis to kill Detlaff permanently. We know that Detlaff nursed Regis back to health after he was basically disintegrated which took years to complete. What bothers me with that is that it could be avoided inside the context of the story itself. The worst part of that ending is what happens to Regis who becomes an outcast among his kin, and he will suffer the consequences of that long after everyone involved, including Geralt, will be dead. The reasonable outcome I see from that is that the event could be used later down the line by Nilfgaard to portray the duchess as incompetent and unfit to rule and then put a figure that they could control, and since the severity of the accusation would be immense it is possible that it could work. One can argue that it would all be blamed on him, and not Syanna, but it would be hard to keep all of that a secret among the nobility. Also many people died in Detlaffs attack. She would come out looking weak and putting her own feelings above the duchy which is sure to cause problems down the line. I imagine how the rest of nobility would react to Syanna being abolished of all crimes when she in essence was committing treason trying to kill the rightful ruler. The fairy tale ending that is supposed to be "good" is problematic for the duchy itself. There is no good ending there for everyone.
